3 Reasons You Might Not Be a Candidate for Tooth Gems

Tooth gems are trending hard- and we love them because they look good on absolutely everyone. But should you get them? How do you know if you’re a good candidate? Read this post and make sure you don’t fall under these three general rules.

You have veneers.

We only put tooth gems on organic enamel. The application process involves a process that lets the adhesive grip your tooth by making the area more porous. On surfaces like porcelain, wood, plastic, etc. we can’t do that process and a gem will have an extremely short life on the tooth, making it unworthy the time or money generally. We also don’t want to ruin or alter any of your dental work.

If you only have a few veneers or composites and want to put a gem on a tooth that is completely organic, then we will opt for that tooth instead!

You wear a night guard or a retainer

If you wear a retainer like Invisalign or night guard, you aren’t a good candidate for tooth gems unfortunately. When you are aligning your teeth, anything that creates space in your Invisalign can ruin the work you and your orthodontist are doing. It isn’t safe, and the pressure from that retainer will forcibly remove a tooth gem in a very short period time, possibly damaging the enamel from the trauma. Just like aligners, night guards don’t have the room inside to handle a tooth gem and can create pressure and trauma on the tooth.

If you wear a wire retainer, or if you only wear a retainer on your top or bottom teeth, we can work around it most of the time! Always inform your tooth gem tech ahead of time if you’re worried about these issues. And bring the retainer!

You have tooth decay

We are not dental professionals- or trying to be. If you have signs of tooth decay, you’ll need to check with your dentist that tooth gems are smart for you. If you do not brush regularly or have cavities, tooth gems can exacerbate these issues, and we are not qualified to diagnose or treat those issues. Tooth gems are purely cosmetic and should only be done on teeth that are in good condition.
