What Certifications Should I Have to Do Teeth Whitening and Tooth Gems?

Teeth whitening and tooth gems are generally a grey area. Without federal or state guidelines or licensing, the standards for sanitation and safety get lost. There are, however, ways to safely practice teeth whitening and gems with certificates and classes anyone can (and should) take. 

Take a Quality Tooth Gem or Teeth Whitening Course

While only providing a certificate of completion, as there is no legal certificate needed, a quality course will alter your entire career and beginning. A training should go over safety, differences in product, cleaning after a client and show you how to use hospital grade sanitation like Cavicide. Taking a cheap class, training, or online course results in unsafe methods that will need to be corrected later and can cause damage in the meantime. Bloodbourne Pathogens Certificate

Anytime you are working with faces, skin, mouths, etc. you should take a class that teaches you how to handle bodily fluids and dispose of them correctly. Most cosmetic industries take bloodbourne pathogens classes, and this is a way to show you know how to safely handle a client. Classes online are typically around $35.

First Aid/CPR

As a business owner, anything can happen. Someone could pass out in the lobby waiting for a service, another could hit their head in your bathroom. Regardless of the industry you’re in, knowing how to help administer aid to someone is important and could save a life. Taking a bundled first aid/CPR class with the Red Cross is under $40 and is an OSHA compliant certificate good for two years.

OSHA 10 General Industry

OSHA has online trainings and the number in the title shows how long the training takes to complete. An OSHA 10 course is 10 hours long. OSHA classes show how to keep a workplace running safely and securely. OSHA 10 certificates will never expire. However, while OSHA certification can be done by anyone, it doesn’t cover the self-employed. If you have employees or just want to be extra safe, this is a good course to take.

Just like a license test, you have three attempts on the test before you need to retake the class. This is something that requires studying and attention and is generally around $60.

Business License

If you are conducting business, you should always be able to prove you have taken steps to legalize your business and pay taxes. Keeping a copy of your business license on hand should you be asked is important. Not registering your business can be more of a hassle later and isn’t too hard to find on your state’s Secretary of State website. 

Of course, you should always check your state laws to see if you have policies in place that prevent you from working with clients.
